When I read Deuteronomy 25:5-10, I’m reminded of the Book of Ruth one of my favorite books. Ruth was a Moabite married to a Jew. 2 Chapters ago we read No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord…Deuteronomy 23:3-6. And yet Ruth had simple faith and chose to love her mother-in-law and follow her back to Israel when both their husbands were dead. She obeyed Naomi and stayed with her gleaning grain for them that was left in the fields for the poor. God’s instructions in practical life- saving action. Her “ next of kin” refused the responsibility of marrying her and fathering a child to carry on his dead kinsman’s name. We see v. 10 come to life: That man’s line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled. That man removed his sandal giving it to Boaz who was next in line to Ruth’s dead husband and who recognized her faithfulness which was beautiful to God.
God’s ways are for our good for all people always.
Jesus was confronted with the above verses as a test in Matthew 22:30-32. The Sadducees didn’t believe in the resurrection and so twisted the intent for protection of a line of descendants into an academic discourse designed to trip up Jesus. They were sure of their beliefs. Jesus, the Word who inspired Scripture for good corrected their misunderstanding of His Word.
We each of us live within our appointed times and read Scripture with understanding that is not complete and therefore evolving. Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” Matthew 22:29.
Do we know the power of God?
Is God personal to us; His Word active and alive? One thing said over and over in the Gospels about Jesus: When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. Matthew 22:33.
I don’t understand everything I read in Scripture but I trust God to lead me as I am able to grasp imperfectly His truth. He reminds me of our history together. He has never failed me or left me. I have so much to learn and I trust the bulk of my understanding will come one day as I am sitting at His knees learning from Him. What a glorious place to be!
