Sing to the Lord A New Song

Exodus 15 introduces the song Moses and the Israelites sang to God. Can you imagine? You know how powerful Pharaoh and his army is. Now you have witnessed God’s power and it is mighty. I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. v. 1. Can you imagine how they felt singing this song? Can you imagine how God felt listening?

After leaving the incredible blessing and victory at the Red Sea, they traveled for 3 days in the desert where there was no water. Imagine how thirsty they and their animals were. We’ve all had young kids. Imagine their thirst for that long. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. v. 23. After calling out to God, He showed Moses a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. v. 25. Their thirst is quenched.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” v. 25-26. He is the Lord who heals us, who provides and protects us. He will begin to teach them how to live which will include guidelines for cleanliness, health, food safety and most important, to worship Him only.

They are only beginning to come to know who God is. They have been brought out of a land filled with false gods and will enter into a promised land that is also filled with people worshiping false gods. He is showing them through mighty acts that He alone is our true God who protects, guides, loves.

This morning in Jesus Calling: Wait quietly in My Presence while My thoughts form silently in the depths of your being. Do not try to rush this process, because hurry keeps your heart earthbound. I am the Creator of the entire universe, yet I choose to make My humble home in your heart. It is there where you know Me most intimately; it is there where I speak to you in holy whispers. Ask My Spirit to quiet your mind so that you can hear My still small voice within you. I am speaking to you continually: words of Life…Peace…Love. Tune your heart to receive these messages of abundant blessing. Lay your requests before Me, and wait in expectation. Colossians 1:16; 1 Kings 19:12; Psalm 5:3.

This morning reading Exodus 15 and yet living in this present time, I couldn’t help but ask God to help me understand today and what happened to our ancestors thousands of years ago knowing He, God, is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Reading Jesus Calling always helps orient Him to me today and yesterday: The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-20.

In the song Moses and the Israelites sang in praise to His saving them, they sing about the Egyptians they see dead on the shore. But God loves the Egyptians lying on that shore. Through His blood, shed on that Cross, He is reconciling all things to Himself. When I read Scripture, I am blessed to be able to know through all we understand in this age how much God loves the world He created. I am blessed to feel His loving Presence in my heart guiding me gently to His truth and opening my eyes to see what He would have me see even through a glass darkly (1 Corinthians 13:13).

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Colossians 2:13-15.

In the insert commentary for this Chapter, it lists the various songs sung to God throughout Scripture. The final one? Revelation 15:3,4…The song of all the redeemed in praise of the Lamb who redeemed them. They held harps given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations. Who will not fear you, Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

The Israelites are just beginning to learn about God’s righteous acts but there is so much more to learn. What about us?

  1. We learn so much from the sojourning of the Israelites in the wilderness; the scripture accounts are there to shine a light on our lives today as we seek to follow Father God. May we draw closer to His Spirit each day and witness His love for us in times past and times present; they encourage us for what lies ahead of us – praise God!
