There’s No Place Like Home

But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin. Micah 3:8.

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Psalm 92:5). How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” (Job 35:7). For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36.

This morning in our Friday Retreat, we were talking about the Trinity, not as a theological discussion, but as questions and responses so we could explore together. I loved how our leader shared, The Father is not looking to punish the human race. He sent his Son to redeem and reconcile with the human race…Jesus did not come to bear the brunt of the Father’s anger, Jesus bore the brunt of human violence and sin…The Spirit dwells within us today to remind us of the love of God and point us to Gospel truth. The difficulty for us humans is the concept of the Lord our God being One…and…Father, Son, Spirit. I couldn’t help but ponder as we talked – about a man and a woman joined in marriage becoming one flesh; about a family of many members being one family; about a nation of millions being one nation…and about how only with others do we truly learn to love. Jesus said the church is His body and we worry because there are so many denominations and fractures within them. One. As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6. We learn what love is from Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit – who is love and who loves us and helps us love Him and one another. Family. Our Home. The Father, Son, Spirit are One in their love and holiness for each other – Family – that is our hope and salvation.

Our psalm today, Psalm 107, shows us how every single one of those lost is found in our God who loves us. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever…Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story – those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south…Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind…v. 1, 2, 3, 8, 15, 21, 31. Can we be excited to enter into this story of us with God? Who are the lost described in this psalm? Those who wandered finding no city to settle in; those sitting in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains; those who are fools through rebellious ways suffering affliction because of their iniquities; those in ships in peril in storms…and what did our God do: He gathered, He delivered, He satisfied, He saved, He brought them out of the darkness, He healed and rescued, He stilled the storms…The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord. v. 42, 43.

There is no place like Home and we are found – He never lost us.
