Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in My name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:19-20.
In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37.
The trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. Romans 7:14-17.
Our chapter, 2 Peter 3, is the final chapter of this letter. And it shows us so much. This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
When you reach that point where you can no longer provide any answers for the purpose of everything you see, give thanks. Because now you are ready to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There is a reason for all of creation and for the incredible beauty and scope of all that is created. There is a reason for us in all the incredible beauty and scope of us we begin to appreciate with His help. It takes time to grow into that understanding and we cannot do it by ourselves. We need Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, and we need the help and love of others who are also delighting in being taught. He is patient not wanting any to perish – so regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. Can you imagine the new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells? All the sin living in us and the earth and its works will be burned up. What needs to be burned up? Sin, hate, war, lies, greed, lusts and all they impact. No more killings. No more children destroyed by powerful men and women. No more cruelty. No more addictions. No more lies. No more violence anywhere. No more mockers. Peter’s words written to the churches then are just as real and true for us today. He is pointing to our hope in the midst of the sufferings we still see everywhere evident. Jesus the Son, Creator God, came to show us real hope and joy and understanding – God’s love the light we can see by and grow into so needed by all of us. The world steeped in sins wants us to see one another as enemies. The Lord is not slow about His promise…but is patient toward you not wishing any to perish…but for all to come to repentance. He is our Creator. Trust Him to know the way forward into the new heavens and the new earth where righteousness dwells! Can you imagine all the beauty of creation restored? Can you imagine all of us restored? He can! Look for these things!
