Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3.
I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Psalm 16:8 AMP.
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6, 7, 10, 11.
I love the above verse, under the mighty hand of God…because it reminds us that all of our cares can be cast to Him. Our hands are not mighty. We realize that never more than when trials come that we cannot change or alter. And in our chapter, John 2, we encounter the difference between us and Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, whose hand is mighty! On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days. v. 1-12. We have read or heard of these verses and I wonder do we forget just how impactful these events were for the people who witnessed them. These things that have never happened before were happening now. And isn’t that the way with Creator God? What had never before happened, now happens. Why do we keep expecting a repetition only of what we know and expect? The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables; and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.” (Psalm 69:9). The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as Your authority for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body. So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. (Psalm 16:10). Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. v. 13-25.
We watched on Zoom last night an episode of The Chosen from Season 5, that showed the cleansing of the temple and the aftermath. Afterward, we talked about how difficult it was for the people and the disciples then to understand what Jesus, the Son, was telling them…and as we discussed it together, we realized it’s still difficult for us today! We see the physical only. We understand only what we see. They saw only the physical temple strong of stone. Jesus, the Son, knew what would yet be. Creator God is not blinded as we are and does not see as we see. Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God…Destroy this temple…and in three days I will raise it up…God’s mighty hand and Spiritual understanding.
Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you…how we each of us need that assurance from God! And He helps us to reach that spacious place where we can let go of ourselves – and those we love – and even each day – and give it all to Him in trust – precisely because He does see and He is doing a Spiritual work we cannot see or understand now. Reading about these events that happened so long ago brings them close to us today because Creator God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and before all we know and see in every age, ever was. As we read Jesus’ words remember they are for us. Read them as though He is talking to you. Remember our last chapter, For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace…For the Law was given through Moses…Grace and Truth were realized through Jesus Christ. He knows and He sees and He loves us and He will be our help, we but need to ask!
