And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John 17:3 NKJV.
Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24 NKJV.
See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and His arm rules for Him. See, His reward is with Him, and His recompense accompanies Him. He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young. Isaiah 40:10-11.
When events don’t happen as we think they will or should, it’s good to remember that Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, knows already all that is needed and will be. As things happen in His timing and will, we begin to trust that He knows where we do not. That can drive us to doubt or to trust in Him. And in our chapter, Luke 10, we meet people who had the incredible blessing of living and interacting when Jesus the Son was teaching them. Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. Whatever house you enter first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city. Who to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades! The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” v. 1-16. We don’t expect words we don’t understand. That’s where trusting God for His will is so important. The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.” At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I thank You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well pleasing in Your sight. All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” v. 17-22. And this next part, really think about…Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see things you see, for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.” v. 23-24. They were living with and being taught by Creator God – the Son. And when a lawyer put Jesus to the test about how to inherit eternal life, did he know Creator God? When Jesus asked him what did the law say, he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” v. 25-27. He answered well but didn’t understand God’s will. So Jesus gave him the parable of the Good Samaritan. Samaritans were looked down upon by the Jews as “less than” they were or could ever be. And when a man in the parable was attacked by robbers and left for dead, it wasn’t the priest or Levite who helped that man as the law said. It was a Samaritan. And he came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, “Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.” v. 29-35. Who was the neighbor, who loved his neighbor as himself? God’s will for us we can’t know or understand without His help – but He knows. And then Jesus and the disciples come to the home of Martha and Mary and stayed with them. Remember what eternal life is…what could be more important than to listen to Jesus Christ the Son whom the Father sent to us. Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” v. 38-42. What is given and what can be taken away? And now over 2,000 years have passed and where are we in our life that is necessary? To know Creator God is necessary. To choose to trust Him for His will at all times is to truly know that He alone is Creator God. We can find comfort in trusting Him and His will and His timing in all things as we let go of trusting only in our own limited understanding and knowing. As we begin to realize how much we don’t know in any given circumstance, be assured, Creator God does know and is working His will.
