Lord Expand Our Understanding of Your Love

Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve. Joshua 24:15.

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23.

Last night I watched an episode of Nova about dark matter and dark energy in our universe; and the understanding they are hoping to discover with new technology. And I realized this morning that it is our ever-expanding understanding of the math and physics and sciences that are needed in every age, things I can scarcely comprehend, that need to catch up to be able provide the “language” or framework adequate to our better understanding. We struggle to understand and yet, Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, brought them into being and sustains them; and how much more are we unaware of that is yet to be discovered? So much has been learned in just 50 years! And as strange as it seems, even reading our chapter, Nahum 3, the final chapter of the book of Nahum, describes events that happened over 50 years before they were prophesied to happen. But Creator God knew. And when we “zoom out” and consider what God is saying to us, can we “see” how much we don’t yet understand because nations in our day and time are doing the same things as did ancient Assyria; and will experience the same result. Empires rise and fall. Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!…Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over corpses – all because of the wanton lust of a prostitute, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft. “I am against you,” declares the Lord Almighty. “I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show the nations your nakedness and the kingdoms your shame.”…Are you better than Thebes, situated on the Nile, with water around her?…Yet she was taken captive and went into exile…You have increased the number of your merchants till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky…King of Assyria, your shepherds slumber; your nobles lie down to rest. Your people are scattered on the mountains with no one to gather them. Nothing can heal you; your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you clap their hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty? v. 1, 3-5, 8, 10, 16, 18-19.

Endless cruelty…the opposite of God’s love. When I consider things I never even knew existed, like dark energy, I am in awe because Creator God created. And when I consider His love for us, even in our sins, I am in awe because Creator God is love. That spacious place I love to be in because it’s with Him…that spacious place is my heart open to all Creator God has for me with Him. There is so much yet to be understood and see and He will delight to show us as we open our hearts and minds to Him. He expands our understanding of this universe as we have minds eagerly learning and open to new disciplines of science and math. How much more will we grow and learn from the amazing Spiritual discipline of His love? “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe Me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming…and has now come…when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:21-24.
