Streams of Living Water

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. John 7:37-39.

The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:11.

I am always amazed by how a thought can gently open up to show me something beautiful. Last night as I lay praying, I realized that just like a gentle current in a quiet stream, Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, moves within us; His Spirit flowing gently and steadily giving truth and respite in the healing He brings. That’s how we can walk by faith and not by sight. And what a blessing that is! And then this morning reading our chapter, Ezekiel 47. God weaves gently His truth so we can see. The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side. As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in – a river that no one could cross. He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?” v. 1-6. And that verse continues on with more verses that describe what Revelation describes when Jesus returns and God’s kingdom is here. Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live. Fishermen will stand along the shore; from En Gedi to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets. The fish will be of many kinds – like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea. But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.” v. 6-12. Can you imagine? And then God continues through Ezekiel to describe the boundaries of the twelve tribes of Israel for their inheritance. “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. You are to allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the foreigners residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord. v. 21-23. There are no foreigners in God’s kingdom. In John 4 the first person Jesus revealed Himself to as the Messiah was a Samaritan woman at a well drawing water. And He spoke of living waters. Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.”…Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:10, 13-14.

Streams of living water that only Creator God can provide bring healing and how we each of us need that healing! But we need to stop trusting in ourselves and in this world. I know how daunting that is. But when we turn to Him in great need, He is here. We have this lifetime to learn and grow and He meets us at whatever point in our life we turn to Him. And then the real lessons can begin. Choosing true life with God in His love for all of us. He shows us how to walk in faith with Him which is not by the sight of this world of ours choosing not to walk with Him. What Ezekiel and later what John saw in visions is more real than this world broken by lies and sin. Our Creator God is. His Will will be done and we are blessed in that faith and hope. Let His Spirit gently guide you forward with Him and receive the blessings only He can bring. The blessing of His Presence helping you draw near to Him.
