Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.
He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 NKJV.
This world we live in is changing with a speed we can’t keep up with. The adage “the only constant is change” has never been more apt. I think of all the lives being upended and am reminded of the changes before World War II, and of what our chapter speaks about. How do we know if what is happening is good or if what is happening will bring great harm? Do people truly not see? Ezekiel 14…Some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat down in front of me. Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of Me at all? Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When any of the Israelites set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet, I the Lord will answer them Myself in keeping with their great idolatry. I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted Me for their idols.’ Therefore say to the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent! Turn away from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices!’” v. 1-6. God is not fooled though we are. The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, if a country sins against Me by being unfaithful and I stretch out My hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its people and their animals, even if these three men – Noah, Daniel and Job – were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord.” v. 12-14. The chapters go on to reiterate the same for wild beasts, sword, plague, v. 15-20. “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem My four dreadful judgments – sword and famine and wild beasts and plague – to kill its men and their animals! Yet there will be some survivors – sons and daughters who will be brought out of it. They will come to you, and when you see their conduct and their actions, you will be consoled regarding the disaster I have brought on Jerusalem – every disaster I have brought on it. You will be consoled when you see their conduct and their actions…for you will know that I have done nothing in it without cause, declares the Sovereign Lord.” v. 21-23. What does it take to see that God does nothing without cause? Creator God’s work is His work and is always needed and He is at work always in our world.
As we see the upheavals in our individual lives, in our countries, in our world, stop and consider why and, what is leading that upheaval? Jesus, the Son, sent by the Father, didn’t come to stop the upheaval. He came to show us what love looks like. As we read about His life on this earth, we see a different way of looking and trusting. And, He says to follow Him. That is our choice always. And the benefit in letting Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, teach us is that it opens our whole being to realizing Creator God is and His love is absolute and will lead us out of the darkness of hate for others and out of the ignorance of putting any idol before God. Can you imagine? Creator God came to be one of us! There is so much we can learn from Him! There will still be upheavals and there will be even greater upheavals when Jesus returns. But trusting Him now helps us see a better way with Him. We have so much to learn about His love. What is that worth to you?
