So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17 NKJV.
I couldn’t help but think as I read our chapter, Jeremiah 47, that it’s already done. In the movie Titanic, the lone elderly survivor who has been brought to the very cite of Titanic’s sinking, listened to the description of all that happened. She thanked them for the “forensic” explanation but said her experience of the sinking was quite different. So it must be for all the experiences in Scripture. And through it all, it’s already done. These nations existed millennia ago, and yet, we still live with the lessons needed today. This chapter deals with the Philistines. For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines and to remove all survivors who could help Tyre and Sidon. The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines, the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor. Gaza will shave her head in mourning; Ashkelon will be silenced. You remnant on the plain, how long will you cut yourselves? “Alas, sword of the Lord, how long till you rest? Return to your sheath; cease and be still.” But how can it rest when the Lord has commanded it, when He has ordered it to attack Ashkelon and the coast? v. 4-7. Our study of history will not be like the experiencing of it. To understand the experiencing of it, we have only to look at today. What motivates the nations today? What motivates my heart and yours? Are we really so different from ancient people because we live in “modern” times? Just like the people then, we live in times that are evil, and always Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, calls us to something better. Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:15-20.
The people aboard the Titanic had no say in how their lives would end. Neither did the Philistines and neither do we. But…we can choose to be helped by the Holy Spirit to see what is good. We can live each day wanting to learn more about Creator God and His love for us. And in learning about His love for us all, we can begin to heal from the hurts we and others have caused. We are each of us in need of God’s love and His truth of that love. All of Scripture cannot begin to describe all the goodness and love of Creator God but it’s a good and needed place to start and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will begin to see and in seeing, know that God is so good! God’s holy love will bring healing and refreshing to your spirit so in need of Him. It’s already done. We just need to turn to Him.
