If we walk in the light as He is in the light…the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7.
Let me hear in the morning of Your steadfast love, for in You I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul. Psalm 143:8 ESV.
Jeremiah 32 is a long chapter. And it shows us that Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, not only tells us what will be but He follows up on that in dramatic ways. Scripture even gives us specific times in the lives of the people living then. This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah. v. 1-2. The king of Judah is not happy with Jeremiah and summarizes what he has been prophesying from the Lord, v. 3-5. And then Jeremiah speaks, “The word of the Lord came to me: Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth, because as nearest relative it is your right and duty to buy it.’” v. 6-7. And as Jeremiah is speaking, his cousin came just as God told Jeremiah he would. And Jeremiah bought the field because he knew that is what the Lord wanted him to do. It was all done legally according to the custom of that time and the documents, sealed and unsealed, were put into a clay jar so they would be preserved. God wanted the people there to know that houses, fields, and vineyards would be bought again in this land being devastated by the army of Babylon, v. 8-15. And then Jeremiah prays. “Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord Almighty, great are Your purposes and mighty are Your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; You reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve. You performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained renown that is still Yours…See how the siege ramps are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague, the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What You said has happened, as You now see. And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, You, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field with silver and have the transaction witnessed.’” v. 17-25. And God answers Jeremiah. “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for Me?” v. 26. It’s good for us to remember that! “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in My furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety. They will be My people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear Me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear Me, so that they will never turn away from Me. I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all My heart and soul.” v. 36-41.
When we read Scripture, we are reading the history of mankind. The events happened. God’s intervention happened. So when events happen in the world and in our personal lives that we struggle to understand, remember God’s words to Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind….Is anything too hard for Me? ” And then trust God for His timing. He is doing a work in this world even in the midst of all the horrific things humans do to one another. Why do you think we need Creator God? Only He can bring good to this world reeling from all the violence of nations and individual people. Can you make the violence stop? I can’t. But I can walk with God in the light of His love and know His light will show me a better way and it is with Him. His light reveals sin for what it is. And….the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. Can you conceive how that could be? It’s too big for us. Nothing is too big or too hard for God! And everything He does He does with Love. Please stop confusing God with all the sins of mankind. God does not sin. We do.
