Can You See the Harm in Turning Away from God?


By one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:14.

I pray also that the eyes of your hearts may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. Ephesians 1:18-19.

The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His steadfast love. Psalm 147:11 ESV.

Our chapter, Jeremiah 14, shows us the cycle of crying out to Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, only as a last resort while denying our need for Him all other times. Do we see the harm? This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought: “Judah mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem…The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land…They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the Lord does not accept them; He will now remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins…Do not pray for the well-being of this people. Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.” v. 1, 4, 10, 11, 12. But how can Jeremiah or any of us not pray for the children of God? But I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! The prophets keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’” v. 13. God is not fooled, we are. Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds. Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in My name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine. And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them, their wives, their sons and their daughters. I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.” v. 14-16. Can we truly not see what we are doing when we turn away from God? To worship what is not Creator God leads us astray and away from Him. And Jeremiah speaks these words…Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers? No, it is You, Lord our God. Therefore our hope is in You, for You are the one who does all this. v. 22.

Creator God is Life eternal. He creates life and when we turn to Him, we are connected to Him and we can begin to be taught truth that is His, not ours. When we in ignorance turn away, we turn away to our hurt. We may turn away from Him, but we can never turn away from the truth that He is our Father and we are loved by Him. For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:14-21. Our Father knows what is needed. He provides the way and He is working for our good in Him always. There is so much to understand and we turn away to our hurt but our Creator God is faithful and He will accomplish all that He knows we need. Thank You, Lord God, for so great a love and for Your will so needed by us.
