Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:10, 14.
There is something remarkable when you meet with others who love Creator God – Father…Son…Spirit. Last night we met together, 5 families, to share desserts and then to read John 4:4-30, about Jesus’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Our take-away? We can keep going to a well that does not, cannot satisfy our deepest need – our need for help from God to overcome our sins we repeat over and over, like the woman at the well continuing to try to find fulfillment in multiple husbands who could not save her…or we can realize our deepest need is for God. He alone can heal us. He alone brings the hope for life that is good. And He reached out to the woman at the well, He initiated with her one of the most remarkable conversations recorded with God!
And in our chapter, Isaiah 7, is the very prophecy of Jesus, God With Us. Two kings are marching to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it. v. 1. And yet, Now the house of David was told, “Aram has allied itself with Ephraim so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind. v. 2. Ahaz is the infamous king of Judah (the house of David). Ephraim is Israel. Israel allied with the nation Aram and Ahaz and the people are deeply scared. And what does God tell Isaiah? Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub, to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field. Say to him, “Be careful, keep calm and don’t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah. Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have plotted your ruin, saying, ‘Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.’” v. 3-6. Every word of God has import. God reassured Ahaz that Judah would not fall, adding, “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” v. 9. And then God does a remarkable thing. He told Ahaz to ask for a sign from Him, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights. v. 10. And Ahaz refuses and says he will not put God to the test. In the notes below it explained God told him to ask but Ahaz didn’t want to know what God would say. Remember, Ahaz is talking with God’s prophet, Isaiah. And what does God say to Ahaz? He, Almighty God, would give a sign and one that Ahaz and no human could possibly have thought to ask for…Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and will call Him Immanuel. He will be eating curds and honey when He knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right…for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste. The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from Judah – He will bring the king of Assyria.” v. 13-17. The latter fulfillment of Jesus and the nearer fulfillment of Israel taken into captivity by Assyria. By the time Jesus was old enough to eat curds and honey, He would know enough to reject the wrong and choose the right; and by the time a boy in Israel was old enough to eat curds and honey, Israel would be taken.
How remarkable is God’s word given so we could go deep and discover together the truths within. A community of believers in every age to worship God with awe, with reverence, with humbleness, with love. A deep well springing up to eternal life with God who loves us!
