Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. John 3:6.
Jesus immediately said to them, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 14:27.
You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV.
We who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Hebrews 6:18-19 NLT.
Last night in Home Group, we were led deeper into Psalm 23. As our group leader said, who has officiated at hundreds of funerals, this psalm brings a comfort so deep it resonates for its truth. He began by pointing out the word “my”…The Lord is my shepherd. And then in Psalm 27, The Lord is my light and my salvation. Do we know Creator God – Father…Son…Spirit, in the intimate way David knew God? My Shepherd, my light, my salvation. There is no other…only God can be that for us.
And in our chapter, Song of Songs 5, more poetic imagery by He…I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine and my milk. v. 1. As I was typing this I couldn’t help but notice all of the words “my” in this one verse. And She answers but was too late to open the door to He…I opened for my beloved, but my beloved had left; he was gone. My heart sank at his departure. I looked for him but did not find him. I called him but he did not answer. v. 6. She goes on to answer the Friends who ask how He is better than others, v. 9-16, ending with His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem. Beautiful imagery spoken in the verses describing the love of She for Friends so they could recognize He. And yet, in the nature of the love of humans, would Friends recognize He from the description of She? I remember watching a movie decades ago about a couple deeply in love. In the confines of their home, they were beautiful and lovely to one another. When anyone else entered their home, they saw not the beauty they saw in each other, but the reality of disfigured faces and bodies. That always stuck with me.
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit…a deeper knowing. Not only is the Lord my Shepherd, but I am His child dearly loved and so are you. Thank You, Lord, for so great a Love. We are all of us born of the flesh by the One who created all life. There is so much more. A deeper, richer knowing that resonates for its Truth. Are you willing?
