Let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good. 1 Peter 4:19.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 NKJV.
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32 NKJV.
Sometimes the enormity of everything hits me and I am undone. How can I begin to understand when I can’t see the trees for the unending forest? I thought about suffering after reading the first verse cited above. We shy away from suffering and yet mankind chose suffering and chooses it still when we turn away from Creator God – Father…Son…Spirit. I may not understand suffering but I trust God. Peter couldn’t understand when Jesus said He was going to Jerusalem to suffer and to be killed and to rise again. He tried to protect Jesus in his inability to understand something too wonderful for him to understand yet. Peter couldn’t see that we all of us suffer in this life lived by choice without God’s love; even though he could understand all of the suffering of living under Roman rule. Yet look at what Peter was able to know and share with us those years later…Let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good. God knows why we suffer. We don’t. God knows the good He is working through all of the suffering of all of us. We don’t yet.
And our chapter, Proverbs 26, continues with those who choose folly and live not wanting wisdom. Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him…Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes…Like tying a stone in a sling is the giving of honor to a fool…As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly…Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them…Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death is one who deceives their neighbor and says, “I was only joking!”…Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbor deceit…Though their speech is charming, do not believe them, for seven abominations fill their hearts…A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin…v. 4, 5, 8, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25, 28.
How do we commit our souls to Him in doing good? We ask for His help. His love lights the path of trust and understanding of the One who loves us so much He willingly suffered at our hands so we could be held in His. Thank You, Lord, for so great a love!
