It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. John 6:63 NRSV.
Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19.
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:5-8.
The words Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, speaks to us are life. How could we possibly know unless we are taught? This psalm, Psalm 146, opens understanding if we have eyes willing to see, hearts willing to learn. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. v. 1-5. All of created life lives, matures and dies…the way of physical, created life. That is how Creator God created physical life to be and we see it played out every day. I keep thinking about Jesus, the Son, fully God and fully human who came and spoke His words of life to us. The fully human part of Jesus died just as all physical life, His physical life through Mary, dies. And the Son rose for death could not claim Him who is God. Spirit gives birth to Spirit. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them – He remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but He frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord. v. 6-10. The psalmist wrote what we would understand better when Jesus walked this earth. After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee. When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask Him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see. The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of Me.” Matthew 11:1-6.
Can you imagine if we were never taught words of Life? God did not leave us in ignorance. He taught us and is teaching us still if we have eyes to see and ears to hear and hearts open to learn. The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you – they are full of the Spirit and life. John 6:63. Good news! Praise the Lord!
