A Place of Peace and Hope and Promise

I wait for you, O Lord; You will answer, O Lord my God. Psalm 38:15.

My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9.

Do you ever come to Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, with your thoughts in turmoil, overwhelmed with things you cannot understand or change? That was me this morning. And reading this psalm, Psalm 137, did not help. A psalm of lament because captors demanded a song of joy. All the psalmist can think of is the wrong done to them and ends with these words: Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell. “Tear it down,” they cried, “tear it down to its foundations!” Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us. Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. v. 7-9. Did he really think he needed to ask God to remember? God sees everything! He sees hearts choosing to turn away from Him and the resulting suffering that we all suffer throughout the ages of men choosing to live apart from God. The psalmist wants done to them what they did to Jerusalem. Conquest. In the notes below it noted that Babylon was destroyed by yet another kingdom, the Medes and Persians, in 539 B.C. Not much has changed at least in the world of ours at large. Wars are still being fought for conquest and innocents are still being dashed against the wall of hate. And still we blame others to justify our own failings.

When my heart is in despair with this world, I go to God. Reading the psalms of old reminds me the heart-felt crying out against what is wrong will never end until Jesus returns. We need to lament for a world lost in sins. And He reminds me so patiently to come and be with Him, and that He is here in hearts turned to Him for help and understanding. With God is my oasis of peace and hope and His promise that will never fail…So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10. Yesterday I was reading a Christian fictional book but within it the character of the minister reminded someone in spiritual need of the verse…Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10)…and went on to say what helped him was…Be still, and remember that I am God. God doesn’t need to be reminded of anything! We need to be reminded that God is and that He is Sovereign and in control. Going to Him in prayer and need, I am reminded by His peace given to me to put my trust and hope in Him and His promises that will never fail. I was comforted by the reality of God’s saneness. Does that sound strange? Is it really? Mankind doing the same things over and over leading to destruction…and expecting a different result…is the definition of insanity. Do you long for an oasis of peace and hope and goodness? Be with our God. Remember Jesus’s promise. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20. Jesus reminded us there will always be turmoil in this world. Why? Because we have insisted on going our own way apart from Him. Old and New Testaments teach us the same thing….Choose life…and follow God.
