I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them. Isaiah 42:16.
You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light. 2 Samuel 22:29.
We can read the words of Scripture, of devotionals, of instruction in things too deep for us, but unless Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, leads us, they are words we easily forget. Help us, Lord. Wake us up to our true hope in You. Solomon wrote this psalm, Psalm 127. How could he write these words and turn away from God to pagan worship of worthless idols? Do we? Can we? Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. v. 1. I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them. The things God will do. How do we labor in vain and stand watch in vain? We trust in ourselves. How is that working for humanity and for you and me?
The psalm goes on and describes children as a heritage from Him, a reward from Him, v. 3-5. We, too, are the children of our God. This life we live exists because our God created. He didn’t create so we would live in fear, in violence, in ignorance of Him. He created so we could have life and have it abundantly. All of creation shows the abundance of all God created. And all of our mix-ups, and problems, and failures show us our need for our God who loves us and knows the only Way forward with Him. An unfamiliar path we are blind to without Him to light our way. Is it scary to trust God? Yes! That’s why we need Him. The alternative? The familiar path of humanity without God. As Jesus told His disciples then and His disciples now…I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you really know Me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him. John 14:6-7. The disciples walked with Jesus for 3 years! They didn’t fully understand until after His resurrection. How could they? Nothing like that had ever happened before. But it did happen and was faithfully recorded so we would not be ignorant. You are my lamp, O Lord, who turns my darkness into light. You are the way and the truth and the life. Help us to realize we are not alone because You have never left us. We have turned away to worthless idols every one. Enough! Help us follow You and walk with You on the path of Your love for all of us. Smooth the rough places of our hearts that we may see You leading us and rejoice and delight in all You have for us. We have so much to learn with You, Lord. Thank You! Are you ready to learn? Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. He knows the Way!
