A Place of Hope and Joy

The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being. Proverbs 20:27.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105.

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20 NKJV.

Our psalm, Psalm 119, has 176 verses and is the longest psalm and chapter in the Bible. It’s divided into sections to make it easier to digest and each corresponds to a letter in the Hebrew alphabet. To scholars I am sure that is very exciting…to me I pray for understanding that brings me closer to our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit. We can be heartened with every reminder of our God. At just the right time the 10 Commandments were given to a people so they could know Whom they worshiped and why. At just the right time Jesus came and showed us Who God is and His heart of love for us. So for me, this is a psalm about God’s word about Him; and it lights the way forward for us out of the darkness of this world and into the understanding of His love that is good and needed for every one of us.

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. v. 1. Why walk in the way of the Lord? Because only with His help can we understand what our hearts turn away from without Him. We chafe at being told what to do and we are in a time when laws are being challenged and broken with impunity. What does that mean? “They broke the law with (complete/total) impunity…without fear of punishment; very freely and openly.” We cry out against all of the violence, stealing, killing, lying, slandering and wonder why God doesn’t intervene. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart – they do no wrong but follow his ways. v. 2, 3. Our choice always. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. v. 10, 11. When all we see is the way of this world and its brokenness, our spirits become weighted down with worry and hopelessness. God shows us a better way and it is with Him. It will always be with Him. Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors. v. 18, 24.

In the notes below it said this psalm may have been written by Ezra after the temple was rebuilt; which was after the remnant of Judah was allowed to return to Jerusalem after being captive in Babylon for 48-59 years. They had been defeated and led away to Babylon because they were unfaithful to God. Ezra was reminding them why faithfulness to God is so important to each one of us. Without the love of God in our lives, we, too, are captive to sin and unfaithfulness to the very God who created all of us. Can you imagine the love that created all of us and all that we see? Can you imagine the love that gave us laws to honor Him and love one another as Jesus showed us how to do in all of its fullness of intent? A place of hope and joy no human laws can provide. A place of hope and joy we enter into with Him guiding us. Our God took the time to inspire a whole book showing us Who he is. With His help, we can begin to understand His love Holy and Righteous. He is the Light for our souls hungering for what is Good. Can you define what is good…for everyone? Our God can.
