Our Deepest Need

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” (Isaiah 64:4) – the things God has prepared for those who love him – these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. 1 Corinthians 1:6-10.

Having been to Alaska these past days and seeing the majestic snow-covered mountains, the volcanoes as we were flying to Seattle, the ocean so deep, the people so varied…the tiniest fungi shaped like cups, the tallest trees – how can we not turn to our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit – and find our deepest need is for Him? And returning to Scripture He gave so long ago, how can we not marvel at words of such depth that were here all along and yet so much still to be discovered and understood with His Spirit guiding us! It was fitting to come to Psalm 105. Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. v. 1-4. It was there all along but we must each discover His truth with His help. How? Read His word, find Him in the words He inspired to be written and you find our God who always does what is unexpected and needed. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced…He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth…He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations…v. 5, 7, 8. This psalm goes on to remember the promise made to Abraham and carried out in all the generations yet to be. Could Abraham have imagined all that transpired? Can we?

As you read Scripture and come to know what God did for generations past, how can you not wonder what He is doing today? And if you wonder why He no longer does these great miracles – know that the greatest miracle is our Creator God loving us. He provides everything. As you begin a journey with Him, understanding begins to settle in place. You begin to understand that the one thing He longs for in you and me is faith in Him. And then you begin to understand that even that…even faith…He provides. Our Creator God is a God of provision. Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8. It’s all here. Every word of Scripture and every encounter with our Creator God shows us what is true. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. Revelation 3:19-20.

As you begin to trust God, you quickly realize that we don’t have the wisdom in ourselves to understand. We are so quick to judge others and condemn all but ourselves. God heals. He teaches, He encourages, He corrects as needed in His wisdom and always in His love. His love for us is our deepest need. In His love you will be saved from all that enslaves us now. Thank You, God, for so great a Love…Thank You for You! Help us to be excited to learn with You guiding us! Help us to stop…and hearing Your voice, help us have faith to follow You. You, Lord, are our greatest and deepest need.
