I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:22-23.
I read the above Scripture right after reading Henri Nouwen: “The practice of contemplative prayer is the discipline by which we begin to “see” the living God dwelling in our own hearts…By the discipline of prayer we are awakened and opened to God within, who enters into our heartbeat and our breathing, into our thoughts and emotions, our hearing, seeing, touching, and tasting. It is by being awake to this God within that we also find the Presence in the world around us. Here we are again in front of the secret. It is not that we see God in the world, but that God-with-us recognizes God in the world. God speaks to God, Spirit speaks to Spirit, heart speaks to heart.”
And then we come to our psalm, Psalm 87. Not only will we be one as Jesus said in our first Scripture, but our Home will be together and recorded as our true Home…He has founded his city on the holy mountain. The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the other dwellings of Jacob…Glorious things are said of you, city of God: Indeed, of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High himself will establish her.” The Lord will write in the register of the peoples: “This one was born in Zion.” v. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. And he is writing that of the people of the nations that do not yet know our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit – Rahab and Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, Cush, v. 4.
Do you ever wonder how all of this will come about? I do too! And God is helping me to trust Him for all things. It gets easier as I trust Him. Trust upon trust, Faith upon faith, Spirit upon spirit, Heart to heart. That they may be one as we are one. Our Home.
