Have We Forgotten What Holiness Is?

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. Isaiah 6:1-4.

You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own. Leviticus 20:26.

I couldn’t help but think about our Creator God’s holiness as I read this psalm, Psalm 83. We have examples of the profane all around us. Saturated as we are, it’s difficult to remember that our God is Holy. I want to understand and worship Him with awe and reverence. It said in the notes below that this psalm may have referred to the alliance against God that was carried out to fight against Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20). O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads. With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. “Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.” v. 1-4. He goes on to list the nations and we could describe that today in the events happening now. And Jehoshaphat? When Jerusalem was surrounded, he prayed with the people to God and God answered: He said, “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s….You will not have to fight this battle.’” 2 Chronicles 20:15, 17. And the final verse of the psalmist? Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord – that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. v. 18.

Have we forgotten that Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit, is Most High over all the earth? Have we forgotten our God is Holy? What does that say to me? Be still. I don’t have to fight this battle; this battle is not mine but God’s. And as I am still with God, may I never forget that God is Holy and His holiness is my protection and my refuge. I see so much that is profane…I want to know the Holiness of our God and rejoice in Him because He is Holy! Thank You, Lord, for all that You are and all that You do. Thank You for Your Holiness! You alone show us what is Holy and Good and how we need You!
