God’s Love Refreshes Us

You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. Psalm 18:28.

He leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Psalm 23:2, 3.

Last night we were able to take part in a Home Group, where small groups meet together in one another’s homes to share God’s love and His truth. I can’t help but feel God leading us, His body, to greater understanding. Each time we open ourselves to God leading us, we walk new ground with Him and it’s exciting! When was the last time you were truly excited to learn? Scripture is filled with new ground never walked before. Every time you choose to listen to God, you walk new ground.

I thought about that as I read our psalm, Psalm 60. David was walking new ground as God led him throughout his life. He was remembering God’s promises to His people and he remembered when God didn’t go with His people because of their disobedience. He was living what we are reading. We talked about that last night – that God is Sovereign and everything belongs to Him. Hold things lightly because all things belong to our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit. Isn’t that what Jesus was telling the religious leaders who refused to listen to God? Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” Matthew 22:29. They were holding tightly to their “sacred” beliefs that had nothing to do with God. And God was standing right there before them. New ground and they couldn’t see it. Do we? David writes: You have rejected us, God, and burst upon us; you have been angry – now restore us! v. 1. David acknowledges it is God who decides the nations’ fates. God has spoken from his sanctuary: “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth. Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter. Moab is my washbasin, on Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.” v. 6-8. David is acknowledging the work of God in the lives of nations that went before. And he asks, Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? Is it not you, God, who have now rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. v. 9-12.

Hold things lightly. Corrie Ten Boom wrote those words and she knew the truth of them having lived through the Holocaust. All things belong to our God and it is He who teaches what is true. As we turn to Him, we find refreshing love. His truth is clear and pure and beautiful. We have so much to learn! Learn together with the help of the Holy Spirit given to us to guide our hearts and minds to God. New ground! The old ground trodden for the history of mankind is filled with idolatry, hate, lies, wars, confusion, darkness. Not so with our God. Our God turns our darkness into light! New ground we walk with Him.
