Do You Want A New Heart?

Love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life…Deuteronomy 30:20.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7.

In the sermon yesterday we heard a remarkable thing. When we love our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit – our hearts are being transformed and the Holy Spirit is within us writing on our hearts of flesh that were once hearts of stone. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Ezekiel 36:25-27.

And today in our psalm, Psalm 59, is the reason we need God working within us. Our God does good work in great love. Can we say the same for us? Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me…Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood…See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, Lord…They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city…See what they spew from their mouths – the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, “Who can hear us?”…v. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7. We are living in days where what David wrote is so obvious to see. And when we turn to our God and ask for His help, we find His peace permeating every part of us. You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely…But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble…You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. v. 9, 10, 16, 17.

Before you come to God, these words are just words. We read them and go on just as we were before. And then a great need comes that we are not equipped for. Our hearts turn to Him. We find One who is listening and we give Him all the burdens of our heart and ask why. The burdens of this world continue on but we know something different and real. We know our Creator God who is personal and who loves us deeply. We change. We find such comfort when we go to Him that we long for more. We can’t do this alone. We were never meant to. Turn to the One who loves you with an everlasting, faithful love. He will guide you forward with Him and lead you to a company of people who are also in the process of being changed. Comfort, help, support. We begin to understand we are not the ones equipped to change the world. We trust God. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17. Wait in faith. Trust God. Let Him lead you forward with Him and discover His love for all of us. Pray for everyone and find healing and hope. Do you want a new heart? It begins with Him.
