The Steadiness of God’s Love

May the God of hope fill you will all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13.

This is one of the most beautiful psalms. Psalm 51. David wrote this psalm in great need and his need was for God. He had sinned. He took another man’s wife and when she told him she was with child, David tried to cover that up by sending her husband, one of his loyal soldiers, into the fiercest part of battle, and he died. And David was confronted with the enormity of his sin. Instead of turning away, he turned to God. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin…Against you, you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge…Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow…Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity…Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me…Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me…Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me…v. 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12. Knowing only God can restore us, David went to Him. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness…Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise…v. 14, 15. And this…You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. v. 16, 17.

How we need the steadiness of God’s love. Jesus came and did what He did because of our great need. A broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart…God will not despise. He longs to help us and restore us to Him. No matter the need, go to our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit. He loves you more than you can know.
