Certainty/Uncertainty

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10.

This psalm, Psalm 33, speaks to me of the uncertainty in our souls and in this world steeped in turmoil…and…of the certainty in our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit. For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. v. 4, 5. Do you see that anywhere today in our broken world? Do you long for that to be true? From the moment I wake up in the morning and start the coffee, my inner grumbling begins. It carries through in doubts and uncertainties and I feel defeated yet again. The problems in this world are too big. And He gently reminds me…I cannot remove the turmoil within or without but I can turn to Him. I can give everything to Him. And I am restored to His peace in His love. He has me. My certainty in Him.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. v. 6, 7, 8, 9. How did the psalmist know? He knew the difference between Almighty God and everything else. He spent time with God and time contemplating all that our God has done and is doing. His was not a casual, sometimes relationship with our God. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. v. 10, 11. Can we be grateful for that? Does not the rolling forth of history show us nations rise and fall? No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. v. 16, 17. If we insist on only looking to this world, how can we find hope? We fear uncertainty; yet, is that not what this world brings in abundance? We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you. v. 10, 21, 22. Unfailing is not a descriptor one could ever use for this worlds systems. Uncertainty. For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Certainty.
