Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. 1 Timothy 3:16.
You asked, “Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?” Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. Job 42:3.
This next chapter, Psalm 18, is a beautifully visual prayer of love for God Most High. David was a mighty warrior who was able to say I love you, Lord, my strength…The Lord is my rock, my fortress and deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, v. 1, 2. Can you imagine? David was a witness to God and His intervention in David’s life so many times and at the end of the prayer, David is almost amazed…You have delivered me from the attacks of the people; you have made me the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. v. 43-45. David knew and understood it wasn’t him. I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. v. 3. Listen to the beauty of these words…Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded…He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters…He rescued me from my powerful enemy, and my foes who were too strong for me…He brought me into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. v. 13, 16, 17, 19. And this understanding…To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty. You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light…As for God, his way is perfect; The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?…You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great, v. 25-28, 30, 31, 35.
Can we give thanks to all who came before us and shared their experiences of Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit – in their lives so that we can know how great is God Most High? And what of us today…when the enemy surrounds us with lies, violence, hate in this modern fast-paced world of ours so different from the times of those who came before us? The days of David, of Abraham, of the Apostle Paul are over but their example remains. Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:7-8. God’s word is filled with examples of lives changed forever for good with Him. We live today. God doesn’t call us to be an army for Him as though He needs us to fight for Him. David understood that. God fought for David. The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:11-16. Our God Most High is working in our lives today. We can walk with Him and know the comfort of His love, His strength giving us courage to trust Him. We can join the faithful in trusting God for His will in our world, not our will…for His way is perfect…the Lord’s word is flawless…showing us how to walk in trust with Him. Thank You, Most High God, for so great a Love. You alone bring clarity and hope.
