He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2.
My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart. Psalm 7:10.
All of the psalms are a plea for the goodness of God. Throughout all the ages of mankind we see the ravages of Sin. We see variations of the same theme of hate and of lies we deceive ourselves in. When will we grow weary of Sin? When will we realize Sin never leads to good? David realized Who his Protector was. Lord, my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me, or they will tear me apart like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me. Psalm 7:1, 2. David realized he was not immune to Sin and if he was the cause…If I have done this and there is guilt on my hands…then let my enemy pursue and overtake me; let him trample my life to the ground and make me sleep in the dust…v. 3, 5. Do we pray so honestly? Search me, Lord, for You alone know the way sin cannot understand. Bring an end to the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure – you, the righteous God who probes minds and hearts…Whoever is pregnant with evil conceives trouble and gives birth to disillusionment…Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit they have made…The trouble they cause recoils on them; their violence comes down on their own heads…v. 9, 14, 15, 16. And so David’s plea because the violence of Sin comes down on all our heads. Our protection? My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart…God is a righteous judge, a God who displays his wrath every day. If he does not relent, he will sharpen his sword; and he will bend and string his bow. He has prepared his deadly weapons; he makes ready his flaming arrows…v. 10, 11, 12, 13. Be thankful that our Creator God – Father, Son, Spirit – will one day bring an end to the evil of Sin. He is our protection. He is the One who saves us, heals us, restores us to good in His love for us. I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing praises of the name of the Lord Most High. v. 17. Remember Jesus’s words? Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Luke 23:34. The Lord, our Protector, knows. He is not blind to the great harm we ourselves cause. He knows we need His healing and He showed us what that looked like while He walked this earth with us. Thank You, Lord, for so great a Love. Help us to take Your hand today and begin a walk with You that illuminates our very souls with Your Goodness.
