The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23.
I read the words of the title of this blog yesterday in a book of fiction (The Scent of Water) spoken by one of the characters. The author spoke so beautifully about the depth of love in all its forms touching our hearts and souls and minds and impressing upon them the goodness of all God is and does. Thee I adore – how can I not? When we stop and take in the beauty of all God created and give thanks, we worship. When we truly notice how can we not rejoice? How can it not lift our hearts?
And in our chapter, Esther 8, we come to a law that I can’t help but think is how we think of our Creator God…for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked. v. 8. In the notes below: (Haman’s message had been sealed with the king’s signet ring and could not be reversed, even by the king. It was part of the famed “law of the Medes and Persians.” Now the king gave permission for whatever other decree Mordecai could devise that would offset the first, without actually canceling it). Remember Haman set a date when the Jews throughout all the provinces were to be killed and that decree was sealed with Xerxes signet ring. Even Xerxes, the king, could not change that. He could, however, allow Mordecai, his new second in command, to write a new edict sealed with the king’s signet ring that allowed the Jews to defend themselves on that day. Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king. v. 10.
The fruit of the Spirit, the love of God. The love of God healed on the Sabbath and the strict adherents of the law were incensed. They thought healing was work. For the persons healed it was life. Thee I adore. We are all in need of the healing through Love that is life with God. Can you imagine? Think of how confusing those two edicts were that were sped on swift horses throughout Xerxes kingdom; think about all the laws today too numerous to count, too confusing to understand. Should we adore them?
On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’, and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” Luke 10:25-28.
God is not bound by our interpretation of the Law. God is Love and He works out of His great Love for our good always. Thee I adore!
