For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6.
Yesterday I had an encounter with God that set me upon my feet again. With the events happening in Israel and the realization of what is happening with the hostages taken by gunmen who have proven their mercilessness and hate, my heart was in turmoil with God. Why? Lord what is the point of all of this? And then His question to me…Do you trust Me? Yes. I trust You, Lord! And I realized I do trust Him and that it is God who has enabled me to trust Him. He provides everything!
And look at our chapter today, 2 Chronicles 32. The powerful king of Assyria has laid siege to fortified cities of Judah. And what does Hezekiah, king of Judah tell his people? Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles. v. 7-8.
With the mocking of God coming from Sennacherib’s officers to the people listening, King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this. v. 20. Isaiah who wrote the famous verse quoted at the beginning of this blog cried out to God. Isaiah knew who God is and what He does. Isaiah trusted God. Do we?
In this world today there are many battles. There is hate and cruelty; there is terrorism; there is gang/drug violence; there are wars being fought and people suffering on all sides; there is uncertainty; there is fear. You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13.
We who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Hebrews 6:18-19.
God knows. He knows what is going on in Israel just as He knew what was going on in Hezekiah’s day. He knows what is going on in our towns, cities, villages, homes. We each of us need refuge from the uncertainty of life lived in this world choosing not to love and trust God. Trusting Him means we don’t dictate to Him or to others. How can we? The Creator God who created all that is including us will redeem all of us in His great Love and in His wisdom…not ours. Humble yourself and turn to Him. He knows. Do you trust Him when everything you do in your might fails? Can we see that everything we have done in our own might for the whole of human history is not enough to end suffering? Our plans exist as long as we draw breath. God’s plans last for eternity. Do you trust the Eternal God? And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. Isaiah 9:7.
