Do you know God? How do you know God?
This morning in our Friday Morning Prayer Group we were introduced to some daily morning prayer liturgies (practices) that when I read those words of old, I was reminded of God’s Holiness. It’s good to be reminded of who God is.
This world we live in is so much; so much noise, so much distraction, so much anger, so much everything that becomes overwhelming in the sheer volume of never ending connectedness that keeps us bound in ourselves. How can we know God in the busyness of this modern world? How is there time? How can we even hear Him unless we turn down the noise? How do we do that?
My daughter asked me several months ago why God didn’t do the amazing miracles He did in the Old Testament now. Words on a page consigned to ancient text unrelatable to us today. The prayers of old remind us – and they show the continuity of every one of us because we were each of us created by Almighty God who loves and sustains us always. There is no beginning and no end. There is God. Always. “As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.” There is comfort in that continuity of God with us in this present world that seems to be unraveling. Comfort in knowing we can ask Him to draw near and lead us to Him. Comfort in knowing He is bigger than all of us. Prayers of old reflecting our hearts deepest desire lead us to Him. It’s good to go deep! We need deep with God Almighty.
Then reading 1 Kings 7, I was struck by the descriptions of the temple and the care of the craftsman Huram skilled in bronze. Huram was filled with wisdom, with understanding and with knowledge to do all kinds of bronze work. He came to King Solomon and did all the work assigned to him. v. 14. Fortunately in my Bible there was an illustration, small but good, of the temple.
I keep going back to our being the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. How are we being formed? How are we allowing ourselves to be formed in God, our Master Craftsman, trusting Him to lead us closer to Him? Not in the way we think is best but daring to trust Him.
We know ourselves…kind of. We know others but only as we perceive them to be. Do we know God? Do we want to? Do we worship a God formed in our image who does what we want, or do we worship Almighty God, Creator of all that is? Do we love Him for Him? How can we truly worship God if we don’t know Him? Ask. He’s here. He will go as deep as you let Him. The solid foundation He will lay is His love. From there we will soar with Him. As He reminded me this morning in prayer, be patient with Him as He is patient with me. Understanding takes time built on the foundation of faith in Him that He lays and builds upon. We are His work and it is good.
