Walking A Sure Path

Do we ever consider that each step of faith is a path whose builder is God? Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Ephesians 2:19-22.

We come to 1 Kings 1. David is very old and his son, Adonijah, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” v. 5. He put himself forward. He takes fifty men including Joab but does not invite his brother Solomon or Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard, v. 5-10. When Nathan learns of it he and Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, go to David. The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, I will surely carry out this very day what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place. v. 29-30. Per David’s instructions, Solomon rides David’s own mule and is anointed king over Israel. Trumpets are blown and the people shout, “Long live King Solomon!”, v. 33-40. And all the people shouted, playing pipes and rejoicing greatly and that sound carried to Adonijah; and all the people with Adonijah fled for safety. Adonijah went and sought safety holding the horns of the altar. He is brought before Solomon, now king, and Solomon sends him home. v. 41-53.

I keep going back to that statement, he put himself forward. I keep thinking about our lives today and choices we make. Underlying everything, do our steps put us closer to God? Each step of faith brings us closer to Him and His purpose for our lives. In the introduction to this book, it says the purpose is to contrast the lives of those who live for God and those who refuse to do so through the history of the kings of Israel and Judah. As the saying goes, strap in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

There is so much to be learned in this life, so much to be mastered in work, relationships, life lessons and we don’t need to do that without help. The Creator God who designed this Universe and everything in it knows. His wisdom who can fathom? In Him we are being built together and He knows the blueprint. With Him you will find all the help you need to guide your steps. Will we put ourselves forward or will we trust Him who knows the way to life eternal? As I get older I realize ever more how much He has guided and helped me throughout my whole life. Only now, I’m aware and in awe of His love and protection. He’s here and I love this sure path with Him beside me. Can you imagine? Becoming a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit! Walking a sure path!
