Secure. I love that word. I come to God when I am weary from sorrows that bear down on me. Sometimes the noise, the anger, the violence become too much and I am undone. I feel old and tired, worn out. When I listen to Him and let myself be still, really still, I feel His calming peaceful Presence. Isn’t that truly what we need in a world so uncertain in its direction? This world will not give you peace.
In this chapter, 2 Samuel 23, it says it records the last words of David. It seems odd to have these last chapters be so out of order but I am encouraged by David’s words. The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: When one rules over people in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings grass from the earth. If my house were not right with God, surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part; surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire. v. 2-5.
The chapter goes on to list the mighty warriors of David in groups of the main three and then the 30 including those added when some died. They were with David from the beginning.
When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father – the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father – he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. John 15:26-27.
From the beginning…secure in every part. Now remain in my love. John 15:9.
It’s so easy to become discouraged by the sins of others and we can fail to remember God’s love that was from the beginning, secure in every part. In worrying about the sins of others, we forget our own sins…the way of the world. Instead of worrying and spending ourselves in anger toward others, effort that leads to more noise, anger, violence, let’s remember the beginning of all things. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1.
God.
Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Revelation 22:12-13.
Arranged and secured in every part. Those are David’s words at the end of his remarkable life. What are our words? What is our every desire? What is God’s desire? Ask. It starts with conversation with the Creator of heaven and earth. It starts with being still. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10.
I am forever grateful that in the stillness with Him I know His peace and His love. When the noise, the anger, the violence become too much, turn to Him. He is here. He is always here.
