We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age, or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 1 Corinthians 2:6-7.
I think about David, a man after God’s own heart who had such a close relationship with God and I can’t help but wonder how did that translate in his personal life with his own wives and children. In 2 Samuel 13, David’s first born son, Amnon, raped his half-sister Tamar because he lusted after her. Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. v. 15. In the comments below: Love and lust are very different. After Amnon raped his half sister, his “love” turned to hate. Although he had claimed to be in love, he was actually overcome by lust. Love is patient; lust requires immediate satisfaction. Love is kind; lust is harsh. Love does not demand its own way; lust does. And what happened to Tamar? He threw her out of his home. Her brother, Absalom, took her into his home and counseled her to be quiet. David found out. When King David heard all this, he was furious. v. 21. Nothing more is said about what David did to resolve or correct his son, Amnon, nor about Tamar now living in disgrace, a desolate woman.
2 years go by.
Absalom invites all of his brothers to his house and when Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine, he is killed by Absalom’s men upon Absalom’s orders. Then Absalom flees to the king of Geshur, his grandfather, where he stays for three years. v. 23-38. The king, too, and all his attendants wept very bitterly. v. 36.
David was a man after God’s own heart and he was not perfect. No human is. This broken world filled with bitter sorrows from choices we make will not last. I think about Jesus and His life lived among us and the impact He had upon the people living then. Is it any wonder He came to show us a better way? Is there any wonder why we need that so much? When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. Matthew 7:28-29.
Jesus didn’t live in a king’s palace while on this earth with us. He taught among the people with authority and compassion….and the people responded! They responded to His wisdom and His love for them. David responded to that love as well and gave his heart to God. Where David failed to correct his sons, God will not fail. How could He let our sins stand? How would that be love for us? Do we want to live in an eternity of our own making or of God’s? See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken – that is created things – so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Hebrews 12:25-27. What can’t be shaken?
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:12-13.
God’s love, His wisdom will remain. The more I experience God’s love the more I realize it is His Love only in His wisdom that will heal all wounds we inflict. How we need His love! That kind of love is a mystery to us but it is real and it is unshakable unto life eternal with Him. Only God’s love and wisdom can correct us and save us. While it is today…we can learn from Him and grow in His love and begin a wonderful preparation for our hearts. He knows us fully. He knows what we need and we need Him.

Good word Maureen! The love of God truly is righteous and beyond fault; it cannot tolerate the unrighteousness of men. His love for us is an active love, alive and working to bring us to His righteousness.
