The scripture verse this morning in Jesus Calling kept calling to me and I read it over and over. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. Psalm 61:2-3.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Do you ever ask God to lead you? It’s a wonderful ask. I love to begin each day asking Him to lead me and show me all He has for me today. Today helps me live more fully in this day ripe with possibilities with Him. Today helps me slow down and appreciate what I need most…His help.
I’m a simple person. Wisdom and discernment and joy come from God. When you consider the wisdom of God, how can you help but cringe when you read 1 Samuel 14? It seems that Saul, King of Israel, relies on himself only. He gives orders and refuses to back down even when those orders have no wisdom in them. He’s leading his troops of 600 men against the Philistines and has given the order “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food. v. 24.
Meanwhile, Jonathan, Saul’s son, and Jonathan’s armor-bearer have gone separately to approach the Philistines trusting that the Lord will lead them. They kill 20 men and as a result panic struck the whole army…it was a panic sent by God. v. 15. The Philistines end up killing one another.
Jonathan knew something vital: Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few. v. 6. Saul sought to avenge by “I”.
I’ve never been in a battle. I can imagine those who have understand the need for food when their strength is depleted, even honey to give much needed energy. It gave Jonathan energy. Saul, not wanting to lose face, orders Jonathan killed. But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die – he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death. v. 45.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. We may not face life or death decisions today but our lives are filled with decisions to be made. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. Psalm 18:2, 6. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving. He’s here and He’s here for you. He can lead you on a good path; He knows the way. He is the Rock that is higher than you and me. His vantage point is perfect and He will never lead you astray.
