What land have we walked upon? Where has that led us? In Joshua 14 we meet Caleb again, now 85 years old and as faith-filled in God as he was 40 years earlier when he and Joshua trusted all that God told them. Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel wholeheartedly. v. 13-14. Curious about the reference of Caleb being a Kenizzite, it said they were a people living in the time of Abraham and that some may have joined with Israel during the exodus from Egypt. The Israelites were always to have been a light for the gentiles showing them God. Here a gentile showed wholehearted faithfulness to God to the Israelites and to us.
What land do we walk upon? We walk upon land created and sustained by God. The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. Psalm 24:1-2.
Because of Caleb’s faithfulness to God, So on that day, Moses swore to me, “The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.” v. 9. And God was faithful to His promise to Caleb through Moses. He and Joshua alone of all the adults 45 years before entered the Promised Land.
Where have our feet walked? What is our inheritance? Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:5-8.
The final verse of this chapter: Then the land had rest from war. v. 15.
Short lived rest to be sure. Where do our feet lead us when we step out in faith and trust God for everything? Closeness to God our Creator and Sustainer. In prayer this morning, I realized every moment of my life, every footstep, has led me closer to God in deeper communion with Him. His love is more real to me than what my eyes see. I know His love and it is deep.
Take His hand. The land on which you have walked is His. He longs for relationship with you. He is working for our good that He will accomplish. I am in pleasant places when I am with Him. I am loved. So are you. Claim that love wholeheartedly! The Lord is your Shepherd. He knows the land. He knows the way to Him. He knows you and He loves you.
