Anyone whose heart is open and not closed. We come to a remarkable chapter. The people are about to enter into Canaan, the land promised to them by God. Israel may have problems in fully trusting God, but the nations in Canaan have heard and taken note of a people who are led by God and they are afraid.
Do we doubt who can see God? Do we expect someone we would look down on to have faith in God? Who are we to judge others? Sometimes I feel like I am trapped in a box with hard, impenetrable walls and only God’s love can enter freely and reach me. When I look at the problems of this world and feel hopeless, I am in that box.
The children of Israel were in that box 40 long years earlier when they doubted God. The nations in Canaan are in that box now and know fear.
Who believes God’s power is real for her? Rehab, a prostitute. 2 spies Joshua sends into Jericho are protected by Rahab and she asks for protection for her and her family knowing God will be able to do this. “ I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. Joshua 2:9-11.
By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. Hebrews 11:31. Rahab became a descendant of Boaz and of King David and of Jesus. Never doubt God’s power. Never forget His love for everyone, including those we deem unworthy. Rahab believed God’s power and became one of 2 women listed in the faith chapter of Hebrews 11.
When we open our hearts to believe in God we begin to trust His mighty work in this world; work we can’t trust when all we look at is the world. For we live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7. Rahab had every reason to live by what her eyes saw; she chose faith in God’s power and saved herself and her family.
Who can see God? Those who step out in faith and trust Him. It is a step out from the box with hard, impenetrable walls…but when we do, we see God’s love. We can take His hand and trust Him to lead us in His wisdom and great love that will heal every heart that lets Him.
