Deuteronomy 34 closes with the death of Moses after the Lord takes him up to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, to show Moses all the land He promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Lord whom He loved was with him and buried him. Can you imagine leading so great a number of people through a wilderness? Can you imagine going before a powerful ruler and demanding they let an enslaved people go? Can you imagine talking with God face to face? Moses had a mighty job to do in service to God and now that job on earth was done.
In Matthew 17 is the account of the transfiguration of Jesus while on a high mountain with Peter, James and John. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. v. 2-3. Moses the law-giver and Elijah, one of the greatest prophets of God, can you imagine how seeing them impacted the disciples? And what does Peter want to do? He wants to put up 3 shelters…one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah. v. 4. While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him! v. 5.
Listen to Him! Only Jesus remained with them. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5.
No one but Jesus has faithfully obeyed the Father. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. John 6:38-40.
Jesus, not Moses, came to obey His Father’s will in everything and show us what the Father’s love for us looks like. Can we listen to Him? Can we grow in love for the Father and for each other? Not without His love and His help. Jesus would have us love the Father and our neighbor as ourselves. Think about that for a second and then grasp how great was His fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. He did that for us.
I have faith in God. I trust Him to lead everyone to His love because His love is the only thing that can heal us. As you begin your walk with God, you will begin to trust Him slowly and surely. Faith in our great, loving God, like a tiny mustard seed will begin to grow within you. My faith comes from Him to me and allows me to see Him. I trust His wisdom to lead me, His love to open my heart so I can learn what true love is…the Father’s love…the light of all mankind no darkness can overcome. Thank You Lord for so great a love, so sure a hope.
