Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21.
Genesis 45 reminds me of a future reunion that will happen in God’s timing. In this instance? Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. Now hurry back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay. You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me – you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’” v. 4-11.
Can you imagine what the brothers thought? Joseph had wept loudly just before revealing himself finally to them. He threw his arms around them and kissed them and then, they talked. The brothers had no idea what had happened to Joseph after they sold him to get rid of him. They continued on with their lives. How could they have imagined God was working the whole time? How could they have expected this outcome? To him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to his power that is at work within us.
Can we trust God? We see the problems in this world of violence, hate and lawlessness; of self glory. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Proverbs 3:7-8. Can we trust God for the outcome of our lives? My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s own body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left, keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:20-27.
There’s a saying I really love by George MacDonald: Good souls many will one day be horrified at the things they now believe of God. I can well imagine hearing the Lord God one day say to us Come close to me. Jesus said, My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working. John 5:17.
What do we believe of God? What will surprise us at the family reunion of mankind with our Father, our Savior and our Holy Spirit who love us? I want to be open to what God has planned because I trust Him. He is faithfully working to save your lives by a great deliverance. He is able!! Thank you Lord!
