How can we bear to not sing of God’s love that is so beautiful our hearts are lifted up in hope and peace? When I contrast the world today with the problems we face and see glimpses of the world in Isaac’s time in Genesis 26 and see the same discord, the same animosity among people who do not know God; the problems seem as vast as the Universe itself….ever repeating with lessons never learned.
The world goes on and yet we see what happened with Isaac when he trusted and obeyed God. We see, too, when he lied about Rebekah to save his life just as Abraham did because of Sarah’s beauty. No matter what we do, God’s word holds true. He blessed Isaac for faithfully obeying Him so much so that he was driven out of the land by people jealous of him. He trusted God to lead him and He led Isaac to patient trust in Him. Isaac didn’t quarrel with the people; he patiently moved on until finding the place where he could live with a well to provide needed water. He named the well Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.” v. 22.
That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.” v. 24.
The beauty of turning to God is that He is with you. The world and the people in it will go their own way to their hurt because they don’t trust God. In the midst of that it can seem hopeless and overwhelming. Can you solve the problem of violence? Racial hatred? Crime? Wars? Can you solve it in your own heart? I can’t.
When I turn to God in our mornings together, His Presence lifts me up out of the mire of the faithlessness of this world; His Presence is like pure, beautiful light filling my heart with peace and trust in Him who loves us. His love is the song of my heart rejoicing and so very thankful for all He does for us. His love holds true no matter what we do.
Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved? All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins. Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Do not be angry beyond measure, Lord; do not remember our sins forever. Oh, look on us we pray, for we are all your people. Isaiah 64:4-9.
Our sins are the problems we face. Turn to Him. “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create. Isaiah 65:17-18.
A promise so beautiful how can we not sing with joy?
