Genesis 20 is a curious repeat of the experience of Abram and Sarai in Egypt with Abram telling people Sarai was his sister and not his wife. Instead of Pharaoh confronting Abram about why he said Sarai was his sister, Abimelek confronts Abraham. God had appeared to Abimelek in a dream. Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.” v. 6-7.
Looking through the lens of God’s love, I confess I took this to God in prayer. If He could keep Abimelek from sinning against Him, why not all of us? Darts of doubt flew in. He assured me…nothing separates me from His love for me. Turn to Him when I have doubts. In this world you will have doubts. This world is soaked in sin. Turn to Me. My children are ravaged by sin every day. Sin will have its end. I am faithful.
I hate sin. I hate what it does to all of us. As I walk with Him, how can I not hate sin? God alone brings healing and restoring to my soul when doubts assail me; He restores hope. He is faithful.
As I returned to reading the Chapter, Sarah was returned to Abraham along with sheep, cattle and male and female slaves as well as a thousand shekels of silver to cover the offense against Sarah whom Abimelek never touched. Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah. v. 17-18.
As I thanked God in prayer for His comfort to me, I realized His comfort and love are more precious than all the gold and silver that exists. Abimelek experienced firsthand God’s intervention. I experienced firsthand God’s comfort and promise as He guided me through difficult thoughts.
In this life and living in this world we will have doubts. Our doubts cannot separate us from God who love us so well. Turn to Him. He’s always there. He understands our doubts and fears and He tells us over and over throughout His word to us…So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10.
