Last night we rewatched The Chosen episode where Jesus turned the water into wine (John 2:1-11) at the wedding feast in Cana. In the depiction after He had the servants fill the large purification jars with water, He asked everyone to leave. He put one of His hands on the lip of the jar and at that moment I couldn’t help but think about Jesus’s hands.
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness”. Genesis 1:26. He knew before He created Adam that He would one day inhabit that very human body He would create. He would one day create the very spaces He would later walk as a human. He would one day pray to the very Father He created with.
I think about all that Jesus did while He dwelt on this earth with us. His hands worked wood as His earthly father, Joseph, taught Him; He put His hands on people who were suffering illnesses and brought healing and hope; He loved his mother, siblings, the disciples, the people He shared meals with, laughed and cried with, taught and tried to teach.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-6.
To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27.
Jesus was on this Earth as a human for 33 years. But before that…In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5.
Through Him all things were made including that hand so beautiful and complex in design; so life-giving for those so touched by Him then. And today…we have His promise…To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7.
He lives in us. We can “take His hand” and walk with Him and experience the love He has that is eternal, life giving, Holy, beautiful beyond words to express. The Chosen did a beautiful job of depicting Jesus’s hand changing water into wine so a family would not be embarrassed because the wine had run out. He cared. The Father cared. Changing water into wine was the first of the signs through which He revealed His glory and the Father’s love. An incredible miracle and blessing that we are loved so well by God who cares about the things that impact us.
