The Disciples Knew

I just read this morning John’s brief letter of 2 John…To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth – and not I only, but also all who know the truth – because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. v.1-3.

John spoke of truth and love. He wrote this about A.D. 90. He was very old and can you imagine what it was like for him and for each of the Apostles and those who had known Jesus personally as he lived and taught among them? They knew. They knew that Jesus, our Lord, had come to this earth to be with them. They knew Him intimately as students and then as friends dearly loved. They were with Him after He had been risen from the dead and were with Him when He was lifted up to heaven.

I ponder this because John was very old when he wrote his letters of encouragement. He knew his time on this earth was short and he knew he would see Jesus again soon. He knew.

If we had been alive at that time we, too, would know. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13; I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. Proverbs 8:17.

What I am discovering in my walk with God is that I live in a “tale of two worlds”. This present world with all its’ pressing demands and distractions clamoring for immediate attention…and the very real world that God inhabits. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall… 46:4-5.

I keep thinking about that verse. I keep thinking about the disciples who lived in a world much like we live in today. Pressing needs, distractions, financial concerns…life. The holy place where the Most High dwells…God is within her, she will not fall…Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14. Immanuel means God with us. Jesus, God, was with them and they knew Him intimately…they knew.

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

I can well imagine that as each Apostle; each person who had the tremendous blessing of knowing Jesus while He was on this earth reached the end of their lives on earth…some in deaths violent…they knew. They knew Who they would see on “the other side”…the other world that is more real than this present world we inhabit as did they. This world and our time on it is temporary. God is eternal. I see and live and breathe in this world until that last breath when I will be with Him. So I walk today in this world but I see the world to come and it is more beautiful than anything this world has to offer because He is there. He is love and He is truth which lives in us and will be with us forever.
